Dangerous Goods

Requirements and guidance for the safe transport of dangerous goods by air.

Dangerous Goods

The Dangerous Goods Unit provides regulatory oversight for the safe transport of dangerous goods by air within Belize. The Unit monitors compliance with the Belize Civil Aviation Regulations, ICAO Annex 18, the ICAO Technical Instructions and other applicable requirements.

Its work helps ensure that dangerous goods are correctly classified, packaged, marked, labelled, documented, handled, accepted, transported and stored throughout the air transport supply chain.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct surveillance and compliance inspections of regulated organizations.
  • Investigate dangerous-goods incidents, accidents and reported occurrences.
  • Review dangerous-goods procedures, manuals and operational documentation.
  • Monitor compliance with dangerous-goods training requirements.
  • Provide regulatory guidance and technical assistance to industry stakeholders.
  • Promote awareness of dangerous-goods requirements through education and outreach.

Before transporting an item

Dangerous goods include articles and substances that can present a risk to health, safety, property or the environment during air transport. Passengers, shippers and industry stakeholders should consult the Unit or their airline before offering an item for transport when there is uncertainty about its classification or applicable requirements.

Public contact information and current BCAR and ICAO references require owner approval.
